  • Awareness Seminar, Painting Contest Mark CISSA Ozone Day Celebrations

    THIRUVANANTHAPURAM:
    An awareness seminar on the theme ‘Keep Cool and Carry On! The Montreal Protocol’, and a painting competition for junior and senior-level students were part of the Ozone Day 2018 celebrations held under the aegis of Centre for Innovation in Science and Social Action (CISSA). CISSA was supported by the Kerala State Council for Science, Technology and Environment (KSCSTE) and National Green Corps (NGC) in organizing the event on Saturday (Sep 22) at the HSS for Girls Venganoor, Thiruvananthapuram.
    The celebrations were inaugurated by Venganoor Satheesh, Vice President, Venganoor Grama Panchayat, at a function presided over by Dr. C. K. Peethambaran, Director, Agriculture division, CISSA. Deepthi Girish, Manager, HSS for Girls Venganoor; Hareendran Nair. S, PTA President, HSS for Girls Venganoor; and Dr. C. S. Ravindran, Principal Scientist, ICAR-CTCRI; offered felicitations. Renjithkumar B V, HSS for Girls Venganoor was also present.
    Considering the climatic changes taking place in Kerala the state should adopt a development culture focusing on the efficient use of limited resource and its sustainable conservation, said Sri Venganoor Satheesh, Vice President, Venganoor Grama Panchayat. He added that CISSA’s activities in this regard are praiseworthy.
    Dr. A. Bijukumar, Dean and Faculty of Science, University of Kerala pointed out that climate change is also triggered by the harmful gases which leads to ozone layer depletion thus the state government and public should incline towards environmental literacy activities. Emergence of the next generation environmentalist from school campuses is a need of the hour, he reminded.
    Dr. P. N. Krishnan, Former Scientist, JNTBGRI & Emeritus Scientist, Malabar Botanical Garden, Kozhikode, led a session on ‘Montreal protocol and its Impact on Climate Change’, while Dr. A. Bijukumar, Dean and Faculty of Science, University of Kerala spoke on ‘Ozone Depletion and Biodiversity’. Dr. C. K. Peethambaran, who is also a Former Director of Research, Kerala Agricultural University spoke on the Effect of Climate Change on Food Security.
    The theme for the painting competition was ’Ozone Depletion and Climate Change’, wherein students from Govt. / aided/ unaided/ CBSE/ ICSE/ private schools in Neyyattinkara Educational district participated. Winners of the painting competition were presented with prizes.
    In the senior Level the first prize was bagged by Prapanch A, VPS HSS for Boys, Venganoor and the second prize was awarded to Akshay VA, Nazareth Home EMS Balaramapuram. Anand M.A, VPS HSS for Boys, Venganoor came third. Consolation prize for the senior level was awarded to Abhidev S, GHS, Plavoor and Shravya SS, Bharatheeya Vidyapeedom, Kurumkutty, Parassala.
    Anwin Xavier, Govt HSS Kulathummal, Kattakada won the first prize in the junior level.
    The second prize was awarded to Varunjose S, Kannasa Mission High School Peyad while the third prize was bagged by Aaradhika S.R, Govt. V & HSS, Kulathoor. Sidharth S, Chinmaya Vidyalaya Kattakada and Abhi J.S, HSS for Girls Venganoor won the consolation prizes in the junior level. The winners were awarded cash prize, memento, certificate and book.
