The 8th Amrita Heart Conclave, hosted by Amrita Hospital, Kochi, the two-day event brought together over 200 cardiology experts from across India and abroad to discuss advancements in diagnosing and treating hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM), a genetic disorder affecting the heart muscles.
HCM, which affects approximately 1 in 500 to 1 in 200 people, can lead to sudden cardiac arrests, especially in younger individuals. Specialists at the conclave stressed the importance of genetic screening for families with a history of the disease, as early detection can significantly reduce risks.
The conclave featured a series of training sessions, interactive discussions, and live surgical demonstrations. Dr. Nicholas G. Smedira, a renowned cardiac surgeon from Cleveland Clinic, USA, led the surgical workshops, sharing his expertise in advanced procedures.
Other prominent participants included Dr. Barry J. Maron, a pioneer in HCM research, Prof. Iacopo Olivotto, an authority on clinical cardiology, and Ms. Lisa Salberg, a globally recognized advocate for HCM awareness. Amrita Hospital’s own specialists, including Dr. Praveen Varma, Dr. Rajesh Thachathodiyl, Dr. Hisham Ahamed, Dr. Kirun Gopal, Dr. Rajesh Jose, and Dr. Rohik Micka, contributed valuable insights and led focused discussions on the condition’s complexities.
