  • Analytical Techniques Important for Environmental Health: Cusat VC

    KOCHI:
    School of Environmental Studies, Cochin University of Science and Technology in association with Indian Society & Analytical Scientists (ISAS) conducted the seminar on “Analytical Techniques for Environmental Monitoring and Measurements” as a special gathering of analytical scientists.

    The seminar has been inaugurated by Prof. (Dr.) K.N.Madhusoodanan, the Vice Chancellor of CUSAT and talked on the necessity of scientific equipments in Environmental Research and shared his insights on analytical instrumentation being a scientist involved in various capacities of a researcher. Dr. V. Sivanandan Achari, Director, School of Environmental Studies, Cochin University of Science and Technology delivered the welcome address. Former ISAS President Dr. V.R. Nair (Former Chief General Manager, Indian Rare Earth Limited, Cochin) handed the momento to the honourable Vice Chancellor.

    Dr. K.K. Abdul Rashid, (President, ISAS, Kerala Chapter) chaired the inauguration ceremony. He talked on the establishment of ISAS, its activities and goals and the need of continuous interaction and collaboration with Cochin University to meet the objective. The organization was established to benefit the society in many ways.

    S.K. Malhotra, (National President, ISAS, Raja Ramanna Fellow, Former Head, Public Awareness Division, Department of Atomic Energy) felicitated the gathering. While giving the felicitation his observations compared environment with a sick human being need essential diagnosis for treatment.

    He reiterated on the relevance of checking environmental parameters accurately and precisely to make it a healthy entity for the existence of all. Stressed that, the outcome of environmental analytical techniques as parameters and data are not taken seriously. So we should enrich the society with good knowledge of analytics to upkeep the total environmental health.

    Dr. Daisy Joseph, (Honorary Secretary, ISAS and Scientist, Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, Mumbai) also talked about the importance of environmental protection in the present scenario and the role of scientists in it. Dr. P.P. Chandrachoodan, (Formerly, Member of Board of Research Nuclear Science & Member, Kerala State Innovation Council) said that science is a process of understanding nature and that human approach in understanding environment must also focus on development.

    Various government departments and sectors has no direct linkages with environment sciences. Students can directly interact with ISAS society for their analytical support and knowledge sharing to achieve the objectives of this measurement science society.

    Prof. S. Sugunan, Department of Applied chemistry, CUSAT, chaired the sessions. During technical sessions S.K. Malhotra delivered on the topic “Nuclear Power, Environment and Health” followed by Dr. M.P. Rajan, (Former Scientist, BARC) on the topic “Importance of Baseline Data on Environmental Monitoring and Assessment” and Dr. R.Rajeev, (Head, Department of Analytical Division, VSSC) give talk on “Analytical Techniques for Environmental Monitoring”. Dr. P.V. Joseph, Visiting Professor, KUFOS and Vice President, ISAS, Kerala Chapter expressed the vote of thanks.
