Aster Medcity launched the new Pediatric Epilepsy Centre, offering cutting-edge treatments and services for children with epilepsy. The Centre will provide all-inclusive care, including the latest medical treatments, diagnostic services, support programs, and specialized pediatric surgeries for children with epilepsy. Mayor- Emirati Councillor Tom Aditya, Leader and Spokesperson of Bristol- Bradley Stoke Council inaugurated the centre.
“Despite advances in medical treatments, children with epilepsy continue to face significant challenges in their daily lives. With a focus on innovation and patient-centred care, I am happy to announce that Medcity’s new Pediatric Epilepsy Centre aims to change this by offering the latest treatments, diagnostic services, and support programs specifically designed for children and their families,’ said Mayor- Emirati Councillor Tom Aditya, Leader and Spokesperson of Bristol- Bradley Stoke Council.
“The Centre is dedicated to improving the lives of children with epilepsy and their families by providing comprehensive and compassionate care in a child-friendly environment, Our goal is to improve the quality of life for children with epilepsy by offering the most advanced treatments, diagnostic services, and pediatric surgeries available”, said Dr. Dilip Panikar, Senior Consultant – Neurosurgery, Aster Medcity. “Unlike adult’s brains, children’s brains have the miraculous capability of adapting and adjusting to any surgery. Hence, the chance of complications is very low and the right surgery done at the right age can avoid disability and may even be life-saving. He added.
Epilepsy is a chronic neurological condition that affects a significant number of children,( 0-18 years) and many face significant challenges in their daily lives. The seizure burden in India is 2- 4 per thousand. Epilepsy is the tendency of the brain to recurrently produce seizures. Epilepsy can produce brain damage, behavioural issues, language and speech issues, and it can affect a child’s learning, memory and overall development if not treated promptly. Depending on the cause of epilepsy, it can be curable, Surgery has proven to be effective, with a good recovery rate among individuals.
“ There are different causes of epilepsy and children have to be approached in a holistic way.
We as a multi-disciplinary team, plan the best treatment for the child and we make sure the emotional aspects of the family and child are also taken care of, says Dr. Davidson Devasia, Consultant, Pediatric Neurology, Aster Medcity, Kochi.

This centre comprises pediatric neurologists, epileptologist, neuro-surgeon, developmental paediatricians, psychologists, special educators, remedial trainers, speech therapists, occupational therapists, and dieticians. The Centre’s state-of-the-art facilities and highly trained surgeons provide a safe and effective option for children with epilepsy who may benefit from various treatments and therapies.
The Centre also has a focus on pediatric surgeries for children with epilepsy, which can be life-changing for some patients. In addition to medical treatments, the Centre also offers educational and support programs, including support groups, and resources for families. Different procedures and surgeries are conducted for different issues at the centre, such as Resective surgery, Deep Brain Stimulation, Vagal Nerve Stimulation and Responsive Neurostimulation.
