

CHENNAI:
A suspected chain snatcher was shot dead in an encounter with Chennai police after he allegedly tried to escape from custody, officials said on Tuesday.
According to police sources, the accused, a history-sheeter involved in multiple snatching cases, was being escorted for an investigation when he attempted to flee. Despite warnings, he reportedly attacked the officers in a bid to escape, forcing the police to open fire.
The accused sustained critical injuries and was rushed to a hospital, where he was declared dead. Authorities confirmed that he had been under surveillance for his involvement in a series of thefts across the city.
The incident has sparked discussions on law enforcement measures against habitual offenders. Meanwhile, an inquiry has been ordered to assess the circumstances leading to the encounter.
