THIRUVANANTHAPURAM:
The city-based Centre for Innovation in Science and Social Action (CISSA), with the support of Kerala State Council for Science, Technology, and Environment (KSCSTE), Govt of Kerala, is implementing a project on Estimation of Carbon Footprint in School Campuses and Creation of Low Carbon School Campuses in Thiruvananthapuram district. As part of this, a one-day workshop to elaborate on the concept of the project and to prepare a working model will be organised at the HSS for Girls, Venganoor on August 10, (Friday) at 9:30 AM. The workshop to be held for teachers and students will be inaugurated by Kovalam MLA M Vincent.
With the project, CISSA aims to assist schools in reducing their carbon footprint and to educate the upcoming generation on the strategies for climate change mitigation using their schools as a model. The project will be implemented in three schools in Thiruvananthapuram on a trial basis. HSS of Girls Venganoor is one of the three selected schools for the project.
Most of the developed countries are looking towards ensuring a sustainable future by guiding educational institutions to turn carbon neutral. This is not the case in the developing countries like India. With the project, CISSA would look to educate and spread awareness about the carbon levels in the atmosphere and to lower carbon footprint.
CISSA is presently the headquarters of the Regional Centre for Expertise (RCE) acknowledged by the UN University, in Thiruvananthapuram. Apart from this CISSA is a partner organization of the United Nations Decade on Biodiversity, International Year of Soils (2015) and International POPs Elimination Network (IPEN).
Smt B Sreelatha, Headmistress, HSS for Girls Venganoor, will welcome the gathering at an event to be presided over by Dr C K Peethambaran, Director, Agriculture Division, CISSA. The introductory speech will be delivered by Er B V Suresh Babu, Director, Energy & Clean Technologies, CISSA & Accredited Energy Auditor, BEE. Senior Principal Scientist at KSCSTE Dr Kamalakshan Kokkal will deliver a special talk.
