KOCHI:
A 52-year-old male patient, who had been silently enduring recurrent abdominal discomfort and swelling due to a complicated inguinal hernia, recently underwent a successful laparoscopic hernia repair at Indira Gandhi Co-Operative Hospital, Kochi. The procedure was led by Dr. Binil Kesavan Babu, Consultant General and Laparoscopic Surgeon, and marked a turning point in the patient’s quality of life.
The patient had previously undergone open surgery years ago, but the recurrence of the hernia, compounded with weight gain and sedentary habits, led to increased complications. “I couldn’t even walk without support some days. The hernia bulge was painful and affecting my sleep. I had lost hope of a full recovery,” the patient shared. “Dr. Binil’s clear explanation of the laparoscopic approach and the confidence he gave me pre-surgery made all the difference. Within 48 hours, I was mobile, and in a week, I resumed most of my daily activities.”
Dr. Binil notes that such complex recurrent cases require precision and advanced planning. “Hernias are very common, especially among middle-aged men, but many delay treatment due to fear of surgery or recurrence. Laparoscopic hernia repair has now become the preferred technique in suitable cases, as it is minimally invasive, offers quicker recovery, and significantly reduces post-operative discomfort,” he explained.
A hernia occurs when an organ or tissue protrudes through a weak spot in the muscle wall. The most common types include inguinal (groin), umbilical (navel), femoral (upper thigh), and incisional hernias (post-surgical sites). While mild hernias may remain asymptomatic, untreated cases can worsen and lead to complications such as strangulation.
Dr. Binil emphasizes the importance of early diagnosis and consulting a specialist. “Prompt intervention not only improves patient outcomes but also prevents emergency scenarios. With modern techniques, we can treat even recurrent or complex cases with confidence.”
