NEW DELHI:
In a resolution passed on April 24, the Congress Working Committee (CWC) decried the Pahalgam terror strike’s “deliberate targeting of Hindus” as a calculated attempt to inflame communal tensions nationwide. Urging citizens to remain calm despite this “grave provocation,” the CWC reaffirmed India’s collective resilience.
Expressing profound shock at the April 22 massacre that left 26 tourists dead and over 20 injured, the committee squarely blamed Pakistan for orchestrating the atrocity. “This cowardly, calculated act of terror is a direct assault on the values of our Republic,” the CWC stated, pledging, “The Indian National Congress stands united in combating cross-border terrorism with determination.”
Insisting on transparency, the resolution demanded an independent probe into the intelligence and security lapses that allowed the Pahalgam massacre to occur. “Only through a thorough public inquiry can justice be served for the victims and their families,” the CWC asserted.
The party also paid homage to the local pony handlers and guides—one of whom sacrificed his life protecting tourists—lauding their actions as emblematic of India’s indomitable spirit.
With the Amarnath Yatra on the horizon, the CWC urged the government to deploy “robust, transparent, and proactive” security protocols to safeguard pilgrims and the region’s tourism-dependent communities.
While acknowledging broad-based condemnation of the attack, the Congress criticized the BJP for allegedly leveraging the tragedy to stoke division. “It is deeply disturbing that the BJP, through official and proxy channels, is exploiting this national tragedy to sow discord—precisely when unity is most essential,” the resolution concluded.
