  • Cusat Radar Vital to India to be World Class in Science: Dr. Harsh Vardhan

    KOCHI:
    ‘World’s first and unique 205 MHz Stratosphere-Troposphere (ST) Radar Centre at Cusat will play vital in making India a world class among the developed countries in the field of climate research and studies’ said Harsh Vardhan, minister for Science and Technology, Govt. of India.
    He was dedicating the indigenously developed ST Radar facility to nation at Cusat. The minister ensure all the strong support to fulfill the missions of Advanced Centre for Atmospheric Radar Research. ‘The youth of India should dream for innovative ideas in science and the Union government will provide all kind support including financial. The passion for science be developed among school children and the sophisticated laboratories will be made accessible to them by the new initiative called ‘Jignhasa’ and steps will be taken to get it extended to Kerala also. The implementation of objectives of National Monsoon Mission under the ministry of Earth Sciences will be implemented through three tier Panchayat system’ he said in the press meet at Radar centre after the inauguration.
    He exulted to make children to nurture environment friendly act in daily life. Ibrahim Kunhu MLA presided over the function. Cusat Vice Chancellor Dr. J. Letha , Dr. Rajiv Mahajan(Advisor, SERB), Dr. B.M. Reddy (Chairman, PIC, ST Radar Project), Jessy Peter (Chairperson, Kalamassery Municipality), Dr. S. David Peter (Registrar), Dr. Mohan Kumar (Director, ACARR) spoke.
    The ST- Radar facility at Cusat which is included in Prime Minister’s ‘Make in India’ project will bring a revolutionary change in atmospheric research. This project is unique in terms of time resolution and height coverage (up to 20 km) to scientifically observe various climatic issues centred at Kochi. The unique location of the radar at Cochin, a region nestled between the Arabian Sea and Western Ghat, is best suited for the study of monsoon dynamics rather than any other location in the country. Prediction on heavy rainfall events, occurrence and evolution of thunderstorms, turbulence studies can be accurately done using this radar. It would be known data centre in the field of Climate research and Studies.
