KOZHIKODE:
Prof. Debashis Chatterjee resumed charge as Director of the Indian Institute of Management Kozhikode (IIMK), today. This is his second term at IIM Kozhikode. The institute did not have a full time director for nearly four years after Prof. Chatterjee completed his term from 2009 to 2014. IIMK is the first institute to appoint its own director autonomously after the President gave concurrence to the Indian Institute of Management Bill, 2017 on December 31.
Prof. Chatterjee has been a dynamic force of change at IIM Kozhikode and looks at the real value that education brings to society. Having taught at Harvard and IIMs, he knows what education brings to the table, both in the East and the West. During his last tenure, he transformed the face of IIM Kozhikode to an institution of national impact and global reckoning. Prof. Chatterjee created history by increasing the enrolment of women up to 54% in the flagship post graduate program. This was a game-changing policy of enhancing the gender diversity of the IIM classroom.
On his second innings, Prof. Debashis Chaterjee said, “I see education as the most powerful instrument of social transformation and resurgence of the nation. IIM Kozhikode will strive to make an enduring impact in solving industry, organizational and social problems and in uplifting the quality of management practices in India. IIM Kozhikode has been a pioneer in many dimensions. We wish to revive our commitment to building up our social capital, enhancing gender diversity and internationalization of the IIMK campus. Our very luminous mission of ‘Globalizing Indian Thought’ is the DNA of all that we will aspire for in the future.”
Commenting on the future plans of expansion and innovations on management education, Prof. Chatterjee shared the following:
1. The Institute has plans to enhance the quality and volume of executive education, elevating it and delivering it as a different model;
2. Enhance international linkages, attracting highly talented faculty of international standing and administrative colleagues to the Institute;
3. To work closely with the Government of Kerala towards strengthening its governance efficiency as well as effectiveness and also its various development as well as welfare programmes;
4. To work closely with the Small and Medium Enterprises in Kerala towards turning them around and their reengineering;
5. Launch new programmes on hitherto unexplored areas such as Maritime Management, as Kozhikode has been historically a seafaring and a coastal city.
Prof. Chatterjee has been a Senior Professor and Dean (International Relations) at IIM Lucknow and also served as Director General of IMI Delhi overseeing 3 campuses. He has over two decades of experience in teaching where he has taught leadership classes at various renowned schools such as Harvard University and Indian Institutes of Management (IIM), Calcutta, Lucknow, and Kozhikode.
