By NE Reporter on June 23, 2018

    THRISSUR:
The Kerala Government plans to develop the district Heritage Museum in Thrissur as a major facility to showcase the state’s rich and diverse history and heritage, Minister of Ports, Museums, Archeology and Archives, Ramachandran Kadannappally, said here today.
Speaking after inaugurating the renovated District Heritage Museum at Chembukkavu here, Shri Kadannappally said the spacious land going to be available once the zoological park here is shifted would be used for developing the museum on a massive scale.
“We have begun working out plans for the same. Such efforts will help tremendously to inculcate in the minds of younger generation, a sense of value about our culture and heritage,” he observed. The Minister noted that the renovation works at the museum were carried out in tune with the Government’s policy to make museums in the state disabled-friendly.
The Thrissur district Heritage Museum, showcasing the rich history and cultural legacy and of Kerala’s Cultural Capital, was opened to the public after the completion of the second phase of renovation works. So far, a total of Rs 3, 96,00 000 has been spent to renovate the structure and its premises .
Minister for Agriculture, V S Sunil Kumar, who presided over the function, lauded the efforts taken by the State Archives Department to preserve the regional history and heritage. “The museum will not only preserve our culture and heritage but also impart a sense of historical perspective to the people. This will help anybody to understand the culture of Kerala,” he added.
Over 100 years old Kollengode Palace, famous for its mural paintings and unique architectural features, was built by Vasudeva Raja of Kollengode royal family in 1904, as a gift to his daughter. The museum, which was opened in 2016, has completed its second phase of renovation and creation of additional features, including a well equipped amphitheatre and children’s park besides the beautification of the premises.
The museum is a treasure house of rare and precious objects and artifacts throwing light into the rich and diverse history of Thrissur and the adjoining areas, including Mathilakam and the ancient maritime centre Muziris.
