KOCHI:
The Kochi Biennale Foundation’s weekly music programme at the Government General Hospital is intended to bring solace to suffering patients, but for T A Kunjachan singing for others like him became an equally therapeutic experience today.
The native of Vypeen has had to spend the past two months in the Orthopaedic ward of the hospital recovering from a severe leg injury he suffered in an accident, and has, over the course of his stay, attended a number of Arts and Medicine programmes as an audience member.
Today he had the opportunity to join a host of professional and amateur singers on stage, including award winning social worker T K Moni for the 201st episode of the show, singing the devotional song ‘Guruvayoorappa Nin Munnil Njan’ in a bouquet of nearly 17 melodious numbers that made up the concert.
Arts and Medicine, an all-Wednesday programme of therapeutic music, is a joint initiative of the Kochi Biennale Foundation and Mehboob Memorial Orchestra and sponsored by CAFS (Casino Air Caterers and Flight Services).
Cochin Naushad, a popular Ghazal singer from Kochi; his daughter Nazrin, a Class VII student; and singers Kunjachan Palluruthi and Yahiya Azeez, were among those who performed today.
The show opened with the devotional song ‘Yahoodiyayile oru gramathil’ followed by a Malayalam drama song ‘Madhurikkum ormakale’ by Cochin Naushad. Social activist T K Moni, a Thekkan Star Media Award winner for social service, captivated the audience with the evergreen song ‘Sandhye Kanneerilenthe’ from the movie ‘Madhanotsavam’ (1978).
Kunjachan Palluruthi, a singer with the Aasha Music troupe; and Yahiya Azeez, an Arts and Medicine regular, captured the hearts of crowd with their passionate renditions. The programme ended with a medley by Cochin Naushad, Nazrin Naushad and Yahiya Azeez.
