  • Linus Fernandes and Daniella Fernandes Win at the Semana da Cultura Indo Portuguesa (Goa)’s Annual Fado Competition

By NE Reporter on November 11, 2017

    PANAJI:
The Institute Menezes Braganza hall was filled with an eager audience waiting in anticipation for the rhythmic and melodious notes of the fado and they were not disappointed. The ninth edition of the Semana da Cultura Indo Portuguesa (Goa) hosted its “5th Concurso de Fado” which saw an enthusiastic audience turn up to cheer for the state’s young talent.
The Taj Hotels and Resorts have taken the initiative to spread awareness on the Portuguese fado and revive the uniqueness of this form of music. The competition saw participation from contestants in three categories; 10 to 15 years, 16 to 21 years of age and above 22 years. Judged by music aficionados Fatima Figueredo, Esmenia Viega Coutinho and Gilda Machado, the competition saw some of the state’s best talent compete onstage for the coveted prizes.
The Fado, the traditional Portuguese music genre and art form can be traced back to the early 1800s. Fado has been a part of Goa’s art and music for long and the experience in the last four editions of the contest has brought forward a few potential Fadistas. In the first category of contestants between 10 and 15 years, Poorita Vaz was adjudged the first place for his soulful rendition of the fado, while Kiana Zara Menezes and Eric J Pereira won the second and third place respectively.
In the second category of contestants aged 16 and 21 years, Daniella Fernandes took home the first prize with a power packed performance. The second and third place was awarded to Sigrid Celestial Velusha Fernandes and Jeannete Camilla Barbosa Noronha respectively. In the above 22 years category, Linus Fernandes walked away with the first prize Loraine Ethel Barreto Alberto and Grisha Costa won the second and third prize respectively.
To train the contestants and hone their skills, Carlos Meneses and Orlando Noronha mentored the participants at a workshop held in Panjim and Margao prior to the contest. Os Jovens de Don Bosco enthralls the audience with their magical performance.
Like the earlier editions this year too will see a celebration of Indian and Portuguese culture including art, cinema, music, cuisine, literature and more. The event is an effort to celebrate and appreciate the rich cultural flavours of the two nations.
Thanks to Semana da Cultura Indo Portuguesa, Goans have witnessed Fado concerts by some noted Fadistas from Portugal like Maria Ana Bobone, Cuca Rosetta, Deolinda, Minguel Capucho, Claudia Duarte and also some Indo Portuguese fusion performances by Goas Nightingale Sonia Shirsat and noted classical singer Praveen Gaunkar.
Semana Da Cultura Indo-Portuguesa (Goa) is supported by the Consulate of Portugal, Clube Vasco-da-Gama, Clube National, Clube Harmonia, BPS Club, Indo-Portuguese Friendship Society, Fundação Oriente and Institute Camões.
