The two day National Consultation Meet for Fisheries Development Policy, organised by Nabard started here at the Hotel Holiday Inn Kochi. Devendra Chaudhry, Secretary, Department of Animal Husbandry, Dairying and Fisheries, Government of India inaugurated the meet.
He suggested Nabard to study various things related to the development of fisheries sector. Stocking of fish seedlinks in the small reservoirs to be studied across the country to get an understanding about the ideal and
Cataloging the policy plans for different States in India. And he also instructed to conduct business meet of reservoir farmers for infrastructure support.
After inaugurating the meet, the central secretary for fisheries had done a detailed presentation of the Blue Revolution Scheme, a proect for the development of the entire fisheries sector. To make the business side more effective, professionalise fishing is necessary. Through blue rev, the central governement is aiming at Productivity enhancement, infrastructure, modernosation, New technology, Capacity building, welfare measures.
The fisheries sector is having huge potential including foreign exchange says R. Amalorpavanathan, Deputy Managing Director of Nabard. Infrastructure to entire value chain is needed. Leverage of government funds to a large section is also essential, he pointed out.

About 25 paper presentations are being conducted on various topics related to fisheries sector in the meet. In the first technical session, Dr. V.V. Sugunan, Former ADG, ICAR discussed the topic, Infrastructure and policy framework for development of fisheries in Inland Open Waters.
Later on, the Fresh water farmer from Telungana Apuchand Eluri presented in detail about the infrastrucure and policy development of fresh water aquaculture in India. Topics like The development of brakish water aqua culture in India, Aqua culture in salinity affected areas, sustainable marine capture potential are also presented.
The meet is expected to suggest a policy framework and a growth strategy for the complete and integrated development of the sector. The event is viewed as a major landmark in the fisheries development strategies of the Government of India in the coming months.The Meet will be attended by all stake holders, administrators, scientists, bankers, leading professionals and practitioners in the sector from different states of India. Secretary, Department of Animal Husbandry, Dairying and Fisheries, Government of India also had a detailed interaction with pokkali farmers funded under NAFCC (National Adaptation Fund for Climate Change) by Nabard.
In the valedictory function tommorrow (25.4.17) State Minister for Fisheries J. Mercykutty Amma will address the dignitaries. Major recommendations of the seminar also will be presented.
