RAIPUR:
A special NIA court in Chhattisgarh has handed down seven years of rigorous imprisonment and a Rs 500 fine each to three men for supplying explosive devices and related equipment to CPI (Maoist) cadres targeting the police and CRPF. Arrested on March 8, 2023, in Belpocha village under Konta police limits, the accused—Semal Deepak, Nara Bhaskar, and Telam?Mutta—were apprehended while awaiting delivery of blasting materials.
Investigators seized an electronic detonator, 45 Cordtex detonating cords, 43 gelatin rods, electrical wiring, and a red Naxalite banner linked to the Konta Area Committee. They also recovered a motorcycle (CG 26J 0754), two mobile phones, and 20 separate batteries. Evidence showed the men acted as over ground operatives under Maoist commander Vetti?Bhima, coordinating with a local supplier, identified only as Rama of Gompada village.
The NIA—taking over from state police in February 2024—built its case on both oral testimonies and documentary proof, securing convictions under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act and the Explosive Substances Act. Sentences will run concurrently, and in default of the fine, each convict faces an additional month of imprisonment. A fourth suspect, Putti?Pappy?Reddy, was later acquitted.
According to the court’s findings, the explosives were intended for assaults on security forces, with the goal of seizing their arms and ammunition. The stringent sentences underscore the government’s resolve to choke logistical support for banned organizations and curb insurgent violence in Chhattisgarh.
