After suffering for 15 years due to a rare bone Tumor in his left leg, a 57-year-old Cherthala native was finally relieved of the peril following a successful rare surgery by an expert team of doctors at Lourdes Hospital, Ernakulum. Jayaprakash was admitted to the hospital in a terminal condition after three previous surgeries and prolonged treatments left him completely immobile. He was diagnosed with Eosinophilic Granuloma,’ a rare bone disease affecting one in 10 lakh people. The Tumour was removed successfully and knee replaced in a complex surgery led by Dr John T John, Head of Orthopaedic Department, and a team of experts from Orthopaedic and sports medicine, oncology and Anaesthesiology departments.
Jayaprakash had sought treatment in other places and underwent procedures such as radiotherapy and chemotherapy besides surgeries but left without any significant improvements in his conditions. It was after he came across the story of a 107-year-old man who underwent a successful knee replacement surgery at Lourdes Hospital, Jayaprakash consulted the doctors at the hospital. The doctors found that his femur was fatally affected by the rare disease and wires set during past surgeries were slackened off. “The patient was relieved of the sever condition and is now able to stand up and walk normally. He left the hospital three days after the surgery,” said Dr John.
Dr. Santosh John Abraham, Head of the Department Surgery, Dr. Shobha Philip, Head of the Department of Anesthesiology were also part of the team. Doctors of the Orthopedic department, Dr. Ranjith, Dr. Kuriakos, Dr. Shinas, Dr. Ziyad, and Dr. Mahesh, and doctors of the Anesthesiology department, Dr. Shruti, and Dr. Ashwati were also present during the procedure. Fully recovered Jayaprakash also got his job back which was once lost due the disease.
