  • Stayfree and Vishudhi to Drive Menstrual Hygiene Management in Schools

By NE Reporter on August 27, 2019

    THIRUVANANTHAPURAM:
Stayfree, India’s leading feminine hygiene brand, has partnered with Vishudhi, a group of medical students, to drive menstrual hygiene campaign. The campaign, under recognition of National Health Mission aims to reach out to 1500 adolescent girls in government schools in Thiruvananthapuram district. The campaign began on 19 August, covering two Government High schools in Vazhamuttam and Pattom region of Thiruvananthapuram and ended on 22 August, 2019.

The objective of the campaign was to deeply assess the knowledge of menstrual hygiene practice among young girls who participated in the campaign, through a pre and post event questionnaire prepared by the Vishudhi team. Presentations and lectures were also made by the team on safe and hygienic practices to be followed during menstrual period. Furthermore, the campaign involved installation of sanitary pad vending machines and incinerators in the schools and also distribution of sanitary napkin packets to the girls.

Lekshmi Harilal, Team Leader from Vishudhi said, “We have always been at the forefront when it comes to medical events. Researches have shown that girls in government schools from low income families need to be educated on safe and hygienic practices to be followed during menstruation, as it has a direct impact on their health. Through our knowledge session today we want to ensure that these young girls learn how to manage their periods in different scenarios confidently and hygienically.”

Preeti Binoy, lead Corporate Communication & Public Affairs, Johnson & Johnson Consumer India said, “As part of its commitment to increase menstrual hygiene awareness in the country, the brand has collaborated with multiple agencies countrywide to educate girls about menstrual hygiene practices. Our Paheli ki Saheli communication tool has empowered girls and educated them to lead a better life mentally and physically. Through this event we want to inspire these young girls to understand that nothing should hold them back, not even their periods.”

The Principal of the school added, “Menstrual process is a stressful event, if educated and provided necessary facilities, this stress can be avoided. Hygienic sanitary products, easy accessibility, clean toilets, availability of water, safe disposal will together provide a healthy environment not only for our students, but teachers and other staffs as well. This event is a great initiative towards the overall health of the society.
