KOCHI:
In line with the Clean Vembanad Initiative, a training programme on scientific waste management was organised today for house boat owners and staff at Pallathuruthy.
The training programme, inaugurated by K Rupesh Kumar, Kerala State Responsible Tourism Mission Coordinator, discussed in detail various ways and means towards working for a more effective mechanism that would do away with the tons of waste generated in the many houseboats that operate in Pallathuruthy region. The training programme began with a function presided over by Abilash T.G, Deputy Director, Kerala Tourism.
Pallathuruthy is a hub for many houseboat operators, and has been extending a helping hand to the local communities to generate income, and thereby boost the village economy. However, managing waste in a scientific manner had always been a hassle in the region. The training programme was intended to ensure that waste management is a continuous process, and to that effect, houseboat owners and operators were given classes on how to effectively address the issue of generation of waste and go ahead with its effective management.
The scientific waste management initiative in Pallathuruthy has been undertaken jointly by the Responsible Tourism Mission, House Boat Owners Organizations, and the KTM Foundation. The process, rolled out under the Greenfield Charitable Trust and involving the local community, has ensured that jobs were generated along with commencing the waste management process.
Houseboat operators, resort owners, local people and the Ettumanoor Industrial Area, where the waste was collected and transported to for effective disposal and management, are offering support to the initiative. Classes were handled by Bipin and Ajith, of the Greenfield Charitable Society.
Malin, Secretary, DTPC; Hareesh. S, Responsible Tourism District Coordinator; Sandhya Balakrishnan, of KTM Society; G.Venugopal; Vijayappan; and Jose Mathew Vadakkekalam; offered felicitations. Somilal, staff representative, offered a vote of thanks.
