WASHINGTON:
US president Donald Trump has vowed to tackle what he describes as “decades of unfair trade practices” through the implementation of reciprocal tariffs if re-elected. Speaking at a rally on Saturday, Trump outlined his plans to overhaul U.S. trade policy to protect American industries and workers.
In his speech, Trump accused several countries, particularly China, of exploiting the United States through what he termed as “unbalanced trade deals” that have hurt American manufacturing and led to job losses. He asserted that his administration would introduce a system of reciprocal tariffs aimed at levelling the playing field.
“Under my leadership, we will impose tariffs on any country that imposes tariffs on us. It’s as simple as that. The era of giving away American jobs and wealth is over,” Trump declared to a cheering crowd.
Trump further claimed that his approach would bring back manufacturing jobs to the U.S. and boost domestic industries. His comments come amid a renewed focus on economic nationalism and trade protectionism among his core supporters.
Critics, however, argue that Trump’s tariff policies during his presidency led to higher costs for American consumers and strained relations with key trading partners. They warn that a renewed emphasis on tariffs could have similar negative effects on the economy.
Economists have also pointed out that reciprocal tariffs could trigger trade wars, potentially harming global supply chains and undermining economic growth.
Despite the criticism, Trump’s message continues to resonate with his supporters, particularly in manufacturing-heavy states where economic concerns remain paramount.
With the 2024 election campaign gaining momentum, Trump’s trade agenda is expected to be a central theme as he seeks to differentiate himself from rivals and reclaim the presidency.
