LONDON:
Protests erupted in England against West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee over the handling of the RG Kar rape and murder case, with demonstrators terming it an inevitable act of resistance.
The protest took place during Banerjee’s speech at Kellogg College, affiliated with Oxford University, and was led by the UK unit of CPI(M)’s student wing, the Students Federation of India (SFI).
Dr Aniket Mahato, a key figure in the movement by the medical fraternity in West Bengal, said the outrage continues as justice remains elusive. “Unless Abhaya and her family receive justice, such protests will happen anywhere in the world,” he asserted.
He further urged the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to take global protests into account and ensure that the real masterminds behind the case, including those involved in tampering with evidence, are exposed.
Meanwhile, the Calcutta High Court has sought clarity from the CBI on whether the case involves rape or gang rape, as the second round of investigation unfolds. The next hearing remains crucial in determining the course of justice for the victim.
