  • Urologists Hold Scientific Conference on Management of Enlarged Prostate

By NE Reporter on November 29, 2018

    THRISSUR:
Enlarged Prostate or Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) is a common urological problem of aging men. About half of the male population above 50 years and 90 percent over 80 years have BPH.

BPH occupied the centre stage of the discussions in the Annual Conference of Urological Association of Kerala , UAKON 2018, began at Casino Convention Centre, Thrissur. Prof. Dr.V.V. Unnikrishnan, Dean Academic of Kerala University of Health Sciences, Thrissur inaugurated the conference. UAK President Dr. Krishna Moorthy delivered the keynote address.

    What is BPH?
Prostate is a walnut sized part of male reproductive system around urethra, the tube that drains urine out. It is positioned below the urinary bladder.

‘As you age it may get larger and squeeze down urethra, causes thickening of urinary bladder wall. Consequently, the bladder weakens and loses ability to properly empty urine,’ Dr.Venu Chandran, Organising Secretary, UAKON 2018 said.

‘You feel trouble or inability to urinate, loss of bladder control, urinary tract infection, discomfort and pain. Consult the doctor at the advent of symptoms. Treatment options begin from active surveillance and lifestyle changes and depending on the progression, Urologists advise medication and minimally invasive surgical managements,’ Dr.Venu Chandran said.

‘BPH is not cancer, nor is it associated with cancer. However there may be instances when BPH and prostate cancer occur simultaneously, he added.

Dr.Darwin D.Therattil, Organising Chairman, Dr.Vijay Radhakrishnan, UAK Secretary, Dr.Venu Chandran, Organising Secretary also spoke in the inaugural session. The stalwarts of among the Urology Association of Kerala Dr.P.Venugopal, Prof.Dr.Ganesh Gopalkrishnan and Dr. Kandaswami were honoured at the venue.

Technological advancements in urological surgical procedures: The conference focuses on the minimally invasive urologic surgical procedures employing 3D imaging and robotic laparoscopic techniques. The depth perception is the visual ability of human eye to recognize objects in three dimensions and distance between objects. When 3D laparoscopy makes possible a 3D imaging of the surgical field and its elements, it gives a sensory addition for the surgeon who performs complex surgeries with the aid of laparoscopic visual system. The 3D laparoscopy supplies enlarged three dimensional imaging of surgical elements, with depth perception, facilitating faster and more accurate surgery.

Scientific Sessions: The conference held Panel discussions on effective ways for surgical Management of BPH. Special sessions were held on urologic surgical procedures to mange enlarged prostate employing techniques on Bipolar TURP, HOLEP, Thulium Resection of Prostrate, Prostatic Urethral Lift, Prostatic Artery Embolization, and Aqua Ablation.

More than 300 expert urologists attended the meet which demonstrated and discussed the old, new and the latest techniques in the surgical Management of BPH.

The conference held Panel discussions and video sessions on effective ways for surgical Management of BPH, laparoscopic nephrectomy for renal masses, 3D Laparoscopic Ureteric Reconstruction, Robotized Laparoscopy, Pediatric renal Transplantation, Robotic assisted Radical prostatectomy, Pediatric urology and Varicocelectomy. Special sessions were held on urologic surgical procedures to mange enlarged prostate employing techniques on Bipolar TURP, HOLEP, Thulium Resection of Prostrate, Prostatic Urethral Lift, Prostatic Artery Embolization, and Aqua Ablation.

More than 300 experts, eminent speakers, faculty, scientists and researchers from across the state are attending the conference.
