THIRUVANANTHAPURAM:
To mark World Osteoporosis Day (WOD), HLL Lifecare Limited (HLL)’s Hindlabs Speciality Clinic will conduct a free health camp to detect the bone-weakness ailment on October 23, Sunday at Hindlabs Clinic near Thiruvananthapuram Medical College.
The camp that will function from 9 am to 2 pm will offer consultation, X-ray and Bone Mineral Dens
“Osteoporosis is not an unavoidable threat. However for some, lifestyle measures alone will not be enough to help prevent osteoporosis and fractures,” said HLL Chairman and Managing Director R P Khandelwal.
Khandelwal also stressed the importance of people recognising their personal risk factors for osteoporosis and talking to their doctors to seek early diagnosis and appropriate pharmaceutical treatment if required.
“Anyone at high risk must take advantage of all available measures to significantly reduce the likelihood of future debilitating fractures,” he added.
Last year’s WOD campaign highlighted lifestyle factors such as good nutrition and regular weight-bearing exercise as important ways to protect bone and muscle health at all ages.
According to new data from the International Osteoporosis Foundation, over 200 million people worldwide are affected by osteoporosis and aproximately one in three women and one in five men over the age of 50 will break a bone due to the ailment, in which bone strength decreases. Hip fractures can cause the greatest morbidity with reported mortality rates up to 20-24% in the first year after a hip fracture. Apparently, urbanisation and ageing populations are driving rapid increases in the osteoporosis disease burden.
The Hindlabs camp is aimed at helping in detecting and fighting the ‘silent’ disease. People interested in registering for the camp can contact 9400027969 or 9400027972.
